Privacy Policy

FromAway.ca - Last updated: May 1, 2026

FromAway.ca is a Nova Scotia relocation intelligence platform. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what we do not do with it. It covers this website, our email list, our quiz and survey tools, and our migration data collection forms.

We are a small independent platform, not a corporation. We have written this policy in plain language because we believe you deserve to understand it.

1. Who We Are

FromAway.ca is owned and operated by Kristina Kelly, based in Nova Scotia, Canada. We are subject to Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the Nova Scotia Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA NS).

Contact: info@fromaway.ca

2. What We Collect

2.1 Quiz and Survey Responses

When you complete a quiz or survey on FromAway.ca (including the NS Quiz and migration intake forms), we collect your answers to the questions asked. We do not ask for your name in these forms. We do not link your responses to any personal identifier unless you voluntarily provide one, such as your email address in an optional field.

What this means in practice: your quiz responses are stored as a standalone record with no name attached. We may store a general timestamp and, if you provide it, an email address. That email is stored separately from your response data.

A note on practical anonymity: Nova Scotia is a small province. If your combination of answers is specific enough to identify you (such as a very particular location, year, and household type), that combination may not be fully anonymous in effect, even without your name attached. We do not attempt to re-identify responses, and we take this responsibility seriously.

2.2 Email Addresses

If you subscribe to the FromAway.ca newsletter or opt in via a lead magnet, contact form, or quiz, we collect your email address. This is collected and stored via Kit (formerly ConvertKit).

We use your email address to send:

  • The FromAway.ca newsletter (biweekly, relocation content and community updates)
  • Delivery of any lead magnet or digital product you requested
  • Occasional updates about new resources, the annual migration report, or products

We do not sell your email address. We do not share it with directory partners or third parties for marketing purposes.

2.3 Migration Map Form

The landing map form (hosted via Google Forms) asks where you moved from, where you landed in Nova Scotia, what year you moved, and whether you would make the same choice again. This form does not ask for your name. Responses populate a migration dataset used to power the NS Landing Map and FromAway's annual research.

2.4 Analytics and Technical Data

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. This collects anonymized data including pages visited, time on site, browser type, and general geographic region. We do not use this data to identify individuals.

Standard web server logs may capture IP addresses as part of normal site operation. These are not used for tracking individual users.

2.5 Facebook Group

The "From Away to Nova Scotia" Facebook group is operated on Facebook's platform and is subject to Facebook's own privacy policy. Participation in the group is governed by Facebook, not FromAway.ca. We do not collect or store personal data directly from group interactions, though we may reference anonymized themes or general trends from group discussions in our research.

3. How We Use Your Data

3.1 Research and Reporting

Anonymized and aggregated survey and quiz responses are used to produce research content including:

  • The FromAway.ca annual Nova Scotia migration report
  • Blog posts and articles that reference migration patterns
  • Data summaries shared with directory partners and local professionals

When we share findings with directory partners or in reports, we share aggregate data only. For example: "68% of respondents identified internet speed as a top infrastructure concern." We do not share individual responses with any third party.

3.2 Email Communication

Your email address is used solely to send you the content you signed up for. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link included in every email.

3.3 Platform Improvement

Analytics data is used to understand which content is most useful, identify gaps, and improve the site experience. We do not use it to advertise or to build user profiles.

4. Third-Party Tools We Use

FromAway.ca uses the following third-party tools that may process your data:

Kit (formerly ConvertKit)
Email list management and newsletter delivery. Kit stores subscriber email addresses on servers in the United States. See Kit's privacy policy at kit.com/privacy.

Google Analytics
Website traffic analytics. Data is processed by Google and subject to Google's privacy policy. We use anonymized tracking only.

Google Forms and Google Sheets
Used for the migration intake form. Data is stored on Google's servers. See Google's privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.

Tally.so
Used for quiz and form building on fromaway.ca. Tally may process response data on its own servers. See Tally's privacy policy at tally.so/privacy.

Gumroad
Used to sell digital products including the Nova Scotia Relocation Decision Workbook. Payment and transaction data is handled by Gumroad. We do not store payment information. See Gumroad's privacy policy at gumroad.com/privacy.

Cloudflare
Our website is hosted and fronted through Cloudflare, which processes traffic for performance and security purposes.

5. Data Retention

Email subscribers: your email address is retained until you unsubscribe. You can request deletion at any time by emailing info@fromaway.ca.

Quiz and survey responses: anonymized response data is retained indefinitely as part of our migration research dataset. Because responses are not linked to names or contact information, we are unable to identify and delete a specific individual's response after submission. Please keep this in mind before responding.

Analytics data: retained according to Google Analytics default settings (14 months for user-level data).

6. Your Rights

Under PIPEDA, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Withdraw consent for use of your personal information
  • Request deletion of your personal information where feasible

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at info@fromaway.ca. We will respond within 30 days.

Note: because quiz and survey responses are collected without names, we may not be able to locate or delete a specific individual's submission.

7. Children's Privacy

FromAway.ca is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information to us, contact us at info@fromaway.ca and we will delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page and note the change in the FromAway.ca newsletter. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
